Meet Dr. Eric Blom

Dr. Blom is the keynote speaker at the
1st Course in Voice and Pulmonary Rehabilitation after Laryngectomy
Luxembourg, April 26-27, 2019

Eric D. Blom, Ph.D., is an internationally recognized speech pathologist and medical device inventor who recently retired from private practice with the Center for Ear, Nose, Throat, and Allergy in Carmel, Indiana. He is most noted as the co-developer of the tracheoesophageal voice restoration technique and numerous Blom-Singer® voice prostheses and valves utilized around the world following total laryngectomy, and also the Blom® Tracheostomy Tube System.

Dr. Blom earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1972. Recognition of his achievements by his colleagues during his 35-year career include Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award (1984), Fellow of the Association (1989), and Honors of the Association (1998) – all bestowed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Blom is the only non-physician inducted into the Royal Society of Medicine, Section of Laryngology and Rhinology, London, England.

His efforts as an inventor have earned more than 35 US and foreign patents, with 5 additional patents currently pending. Dr. Blom has authored or co-authored 60 scientific publications and has been an invited guest lecturer at conferences throughout the United States and 24 foreign countries.

In recent years, Dr. Blom began to focus his attention on the communication needs of patients who are aphonic because they are mechanically ventilated through a tracheostomy tube having a fully inflated cuff. The recently introduced Blom® Tracheostomy Tube and Speech Inner Cannula uniquely eliminates this problem and is expected to revolutionize the opportunity for ventilator-dependent patients around the world to speak with their larynx.

Dr. Blom is active as the Global Consultant for Innovation and Clinical Affairs for InHealth Technologies. His "Quality of Life" contributions to patients, supported by innovative technologies for clinicians and the medical device community for over 40 years, continue with intensity and passion.

On a personal note, Dr. Blom and his wife Sally have been married 51 years and live in Carmel, Indiana. In moments of leisure, Dr. Blom enjoys landscaping and is an enthusiastic auto racing fan, but stresses that his role in this area is strictly that of a spectator. He is also a collector of exotic foreign cars.
