Preoperative laryngectomy counseling helps prepare patients and their families for the upcoming changes associated with their surgery. Although patients, caregivers, and providers have long recognized the psychosocial benefits of preoperative counseling, a recent study provided proof of its benefit.
Patients who participated in a thorough preoperative counseling with a speech pathologist tended to have a 3-day shorter hospital stay than patients who did not participate in this visit.
With patient room charges accounting for the largest share of the total cost for a laryngectomy, a 60-minute face-to-face outpatient visit may make a significant economic impact on patients and hospitals alike.
